Professor of Kinesiology and Community Health, University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign
Dr. Weimo Zhu is a Co‑Founding President of the World Taiji Science Federation (WTSF) and Journal of Taiji Science (JTS). He serves as a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and is an internationally recognized authority in Kinesmetrics—a field he originated, focusing on measurement and evaluation in kinesiology.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and leads the Kinesmetrics Laboratory at UIUC. His research spans physical fitness testing, physical activity surveillance, youth health, and the scientific evaluation of mind-body practices such as Taiji and Qigong. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in SCI/SSCI-indexed journals and has served as Principal Investigator on major research grants funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).
Dr. Zhu served as Editor-in-Chief of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and held editorial roles with leading journals such as the Journal of Physical Activity and Health and Frontiers in Physiology. He has contributed to numerous U.S. national expert panels, including those convened by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the Institute of Medicine.
A long-time practitioner and scientific advocate of traditional Chinese wellness practices, Dr. Zhu actively promotes the integration of Taiji and Qigong into evidence-based wellness models. He is a Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Kinesiology, the American College of Sports Medicine, and SHAPE America’s Research Council. In 2020, he received SHAPE America’s Measurement & Evaluation Lifetime Achievement Award.
